I must have told this family about 241 time between their first inquiry and the day I delivered their photos that their little dumpling was at my FAVORITE age for photographing babies.
Don’t get me wrong. I love newborn sessions. There’s something so magical and new and surreal about those first weeks after baby arrives. This period of time is also such a whirlwind that it’s BEGGING to be frozen in photos — you will NOT remember much of the fog of those few weeks; I can guarantee you that. And oh, those floppy, fuzzy, squinchy, tiny little bodies. You can’t help but imagine them looking exactly that same way in your belly a blink of an eye ago. I remember pushing on a little folded up knee in a swaddle and realizing that’s exactly what that knee felt like under my maternity shirt….
BUT.
When a baby reaches about 5 or 6 months … it’s a whole ‘nother bundle of wonderfulness.
Part of it is that once babies are able to support themselves a bit– either sitting or pushing up or even propped in a toy or on a parent’s lap — they’ve got a whole new perpective on the world. And they LOVE it. They can see so much more! And it’s all amazing and new! Babies this age tend to be really happy and smiley.
And don’t get me started on those round, mushy baby bodies. The soft, doughy folds. The Houdini-like poses they’re capable of. It’s a photographer’s dream.
And more than all of this, it’s the fact that they’re starting to become themselves, and to appreciate that you, their parents and siblings, are simply the greatest thing in the whole wide world. The way they look at you, the way their eyes follow your every move, they way they cackle when you so much as look at them …. they way they look at ME as if to say “do you see how much these people love me? Isn’t it the greatest?”
I guess that’s it, really. Babies at this age are starting to show us their personalities and are finally able to be part of an actual family dynamic.
And it’s wonderful.
To encourage more babies this age and stage in front of my lens, I created a Baby Plan years ago — fun perks and significant collection discounts if you give me allllll the best baby stages.
Thanks for looking,
