You may have noticed that something NEW has started to happen here at LYYP during the last year. While once these pages were populated primarily with photos of babies, kids and families, there have been some BELLY sightings here. Yes, maternity photos.
When I first started out in business, I wasn’t sure how (or IF, really) maternity sessions would fit in to the kind of work that I love to do. My “thing” — the thing that has me bouncing home with a huge dorky smile on my face after every single session — is to capture the connections between people who love each other. You and your kids. Your boy and your girl. Your husband and your newborn son. My goal is to do more than just take your picture — it’s to SHOW you how you look when you’re loving each other — to tell your story right now. Traditional portrait photography has never appealed to me because when the only interaction is between the subject and the camera lens, I truly feel that the photos seem flat. So, where would maternity sessions — portraits of a mother with her pregnant belly — fit in?
Here’s what it took me a little time to realize. With maternity sessions, there is a great connection between the expectant parents, between the mom-to-be and her baby, and sometimes, between the soon-to-be big brother or sister and his upcoming protege. Of course you already love the little peanut, and it shows. But on top of the connection, there’s this other BIG, magical thing in the air during maternity sessions — it’s expectation. Honestly, it’s hard to describe, but there’s an energy of excitement and of plans and possibilities when a family is waiting for baby. In the stack of books the parents are collecting and reading aloud so that baby can hear. The cradle grandma made sitting in the corner. The changing table dad spent all Saturday assembling. Basically, what I realized is that the time before baby arrives is a really important part of YOUR story, and a HUGE part of baby’s. Think about it — have you ever looked at photos of your mom when she was pregnant with you? Isn’t it cool to imagine what your parents’ thoughts and dreams were like when they were waiting for you? And isn’t it interesting how your feelings about those photos have evolved as you’ve grown and matured yourself, and now that you’re carrying your own baby?
So, anyway, that’s a long, stream-of-consciousness explanation for why I’m really excited to be offering maternity sessions in 2014. I can’t wait to tell the first chapter of your story as a family (or chapter 3 or 5 or whatever, if this isn’t your first).
AND — are you still with me? — if you book from now until February 28th, I will WAIVE the maternity session fee when you book your newborn session. (Prints and digital files are extra). Book now for any time in the next nine months! Both maternity and newborn sessions are booked by due date, so all you need to know is your EDD.
