The Pelham Front Stoop Project

Just before the “Stay at Home/NY Pause Order” was issued here in NY, I got wind of a fabulous project that had been started in other parts of the country – the “Front Steps Project” – and immediately went into planning mode. It was perfect, I thought. It would give me a place to channel my energy and would tap right into that famous Pelham community spirit. (Did you see what Pelhamites were doing??? Sewing masks? Rallying behind local small businesses? Delivering groceries? Making rainbows everywhere with paint and construction paper and chalk? Buying only a REASONABLE amount of supplies and toilet paper?)
When we were ordered to stay home, I was forced to exercise my “patience” muscle and put the project on hold. It was brutal.
During the last two weeks of May, social distancing guidelines were sufficiently relaxed and the Pelham Front Stoop Project was underway. Pelham’s legendary community spirit did not disappoint.
Four local photographers (Liz Farrell, Jelena Mileno, Lori Carlton and yours truly) teamed up with the Junior League of Pelham (liaison Lisa Horten and behind-the-scenes organizational wizards Jill Kirby and Stacy Gatto) to bring The Pelham Front Stoop Project. Super quick and fun front stoop portraits for Pelham families in exchange for donations to the Pelham Cares: Neighbor to Neighbor Campaign. Over the two week span of the project, we photographed over 300 families and raised over $16,000 for the campaign. (That’s LOTS of meals bought at local Pelham eateries and delivered to our essential frontline workers!) We also saw a lot of “quaranteam” smiles and had a lot of fun. There’s no place like Pelham!
