“Babies control and bring up their families as much as they are controlled by them; in fact … the family brings up baby by being brought up by him.”
— Erik H. Erikson
The first time I read that quote I thought, “Huh? What’d he say?”
Then I let it settle a little, read it again and thought about it some more. And the second time, it made a lot of sense. In fact, it reminded me of a discussion I had had with this baby’s mommy.
I think what it means is this: Every baby, be it the first or the fourth (like this cutie), changes its family into something it couldn’t have been without them. And it’s that ‘changed’ family that brings up baby.
I almost think this little one knows that already.
