WHAT TO WEAR

in family or newborn photos is a snapshot of where your family is at this moment -- in age, in fashion in current trends.  It's a moment:  frozen. That can feel daunting. But deciding what to wear for your family or newborn session doesn't have to be stressful.

FOR ALL SESSIONS...

Who has the hardest time finding something they feel really good in?  (There's no shame in this if it's you! In fact I'll go farther and say that with newborn sessions, the new mom is automatically this person - pick....) Choose a jumpsuit, dress, or sweater and use this element as your color family starting point, sourcing colors you'd like to use for everyone else.

There's really only ONE general rule I recommend you stick to when picking out clothes for your session:

What you wear should be comfortable and authentic to you. The key is finding a balance between something that you feel good in and something you can sit on the floor or cuddle on the couch in comfortably.

start by picking the main element for the trickiest person in your family

Pssst ... "all in blue" is not a color family.

Remember, FUN is more important than fashionable.  If something doesn't quite fit right or your toddler refuses to wear the pants you bought, pivot.  A power struggle can change the whole vibe of a session and that's NOT what we're looking to memorialize forever in photos.  I also love for kids to spend part of the time in pajamas or dress-up clothes or that shirt that they insist on wearing every day if that’s part of your story right now. That’s the kind of thing you want to remember!

EXAMPLES OF COLOR FAMILIES? JEWEL TONES, PASTELS, MONOCHROME (with varying tones), MUTED colors, PRIMARY COLORS

Then use those color families to dress your family. Layers, textures and pattern add visual interest -- think scarves, jackets, jewelry -- let your personality shine through.

BE FLEXIBLE

Bare feet or socks (without logos) are perfect for tickle fights on the bed and board games on the floor.

pick something that mom feels good in and then work everything around that (dresses are great for new moms). Baby is most comfortable (and cutest) in a simple onesie or wrapped in a blanket. Fussy collars, dresses and shoes on baby are uncomfortable and distracting. White and/or pastels are a great classic option for babies.

for newborn sessions ...

DOS AND DON'TS:

  • Do feel free to mix patterns and bright colors, but stay away from all white, all black or neon colors
  • Do plan ahead, but don't make kids' outfits a fight.  Offering options can help!
  • Do feel free to lay outfits out on a bed and text me a photo beforehand.  I'm happy to give input!
  • Do coordinate outfits (or at least don't clash), but don't go with "matchy-matchy"
